The Polo shirt did not begin with the sport of polo at all. The polo was designed for tennis, because the designer Rene Lacoste thought that the tennis wear of the time was too stiff and uncomfortable. He envisioned a shirt that could breathe better, including a collar which could be used to protect the neck from the sun, and sleeves which would not roll down mid match. Lacoste debuted his new shirt at the 1926 U.S. Open.
It was not until the 1930s that polo players began adopting Lacostes invention in place of their own restrictive uniforms. Then, when Ralph Lauren included the polo in his fashion line Polo, the popularity of the polo shirt exploded.
