So you want to be in the t-shirt business.\u00a0 Its sounds like fun (and it is) but like anything else in life it\u2019s a lot of hard work.\u00a0 If you are serious about being in the business you want to know what you are getting into.\u00a0 Here are a few things to think about before you jump in.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 \u00a0Choose a Specialty<\/strong>– What part of the business do you want to be in?\u00a0\u00a0 Perhaps a screen printer or embroiderer?\u00a0 This will take capital to purchase the machinery and a great deal of know how.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing, you will waste a lot of money burning through blank t-shirts and ink.\u00a0 We suggest working for someone first to know the ins and outs of the business.\u00a0 Or perhaps you want to be a wholesale distributor much like The Adair Group.\u00a0 This also takes capital to stock inventory, have a warehouse, and many other challenges.\u00a0 Also margins can be tight when you are just offering blanks.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 Long Hours, Hard Work<\/strong>– Like starting any other business, the hours will be long at first. Once you get everything setup organizationally speaking, then you need to get sales.\u00a0 Don\u2019t have an outgoing personality?\u00a0 Then this probably isn\u2019t for you.\u00a0 If you become a printer you will be dealing with deadlines.\u00a0 Perhaps a<\/p>\n

customer needs a rush job.\u00a0 Guess what, that means you will be working late and on the weekends as well.\u00a0 Welcome to the t-shirt business.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Managing People<\/strong>– Do you like managing people?\u00a0 Remember if you grow your t-shirt business you will need to hire employees.\u00a0 The most important part to any business is the people.\u00a0 Do your best to find the right ones and put processes in place so everyone is accountable.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Financing the Business<\/strong>– How are you going to finance the t-shirt business? Perhaps a loan from family and friends or a loan from a bank.\u00a0 It is important that your business is well capitalized or you will be setting yourself up to fail.\u00a0 Remember you will need to buy your t-shirts in bulk <\/a>to compete and this takes capital.<\/p>\n
