From high-waisted jeans to oversized flannel, and with the &#8217;90s sitcoms rebooting left and right, people remember what they loved about this decade. Let\u2019s take a look at t-shirts as a unique garment that defined modern fashion, with a special focus on a decade of trendsetting and great TV. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><b>A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE T-SHIRT<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, the t-shirt doesn\u2019t belong to any one decade, although the \u201890s saw some pretty hip manifestations. And while the garment with its recognizable shape was around for most of the twentieth century, it wasn\u2019t until the second half of the century that culturally we started to accept it as something other than underwear. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The t-shirt evolved from a 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-century style of men\u2019s underwear called \u201cthe union suit,\u201d which paired the t-shirt shape on top with shorts or pants on the bottom. As a one-piece flannel, the union suit was great in the winter, when workers needed the extra protection from the cold, but torturous in the summer when there was no way for workers wearing it to cool down without cutting off the bottom half. Scott Fitzgerald coined the term \u201ct-shirt\u201d in 1920 when he had a character sporting one in his novel, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Side of Paradise. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After World War II, when soldiers coming home brought back their t-shirts and started wearing them as stand-alone pieces rather than undershirts, the t-shirt earned its title as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">casual top. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time the \u201890s rolled around, t-shirts were so widespread that designers became extremely creative in order to maintain the garment\u2019s originality. TV shows reflected this widespread popularity, and fictional characters became casual fashion icons. The show focused on the ringleader of the group of friends, Zack Morris. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, his best friend Screech, played by Dustin Diamond, often stole the scenes. Though Screech was something of a nerd, his wardrobe didn\u2019t lack for originality. These matching girl-power get-ups show how close the two friends were on the show. The two had been best friends in high school, and while life had put distance between them, they reunited after Rachel left her fianc\u00e9.
