Cotton Prices Affect Wholesale T-Shirt Market

Many of you know that cotton prices have had a major affect on the wholesale t-shirt market the past few years. Most of the world’s cotton is grown in China and Pakistan and both of these countries have been hard hit by severe weather conditions which negatively impacted the cotton crop. So what does this mean to you? Well…it’s simply a matter of supply and demand. If there is less cotton crop, the supply is limited which drives the price up. So the same t-shirt you were purchasing 3 years ago may be 20% higher priced now.

T-Shirt factories like Hanes and Gildan have to pay more for their raw materials and must pass on this added expense to their customers. The good news is the worst is behind us we think. Cotton prices have come back down but major t-shirt mills are still working through older inventory so we haven’t’ seen prices come back down to levels they were a few years ago. This cotton price issue not only affects the t-shirt market but also sweatshirts, polar fleece, polos, and many other items not related to our business directly. Is there a way to avoid this issue happening again in the future? Not really. Mother is nature is going to do what she is going to do and that is the bottom line. Yes, when cotton price are low, factories can stock pile inventory, but that may not be the best way to go about things. Many factories have started buying their cotton 12-24 months in advance when they used to only purchase 9 months in advance. We shall see if this is the best strategy for them. Not to plug our own business, but buying from us is even more valuable during these times because our t-shirt prices are lower than anywhere. Just saying!

Well it is that time of the year again. The day where we all celebrate our wonderful, amazing and giving mother is almost upon us. Why is it smart to purchase surplus t-shirts? This is a question we are asked all the time and I thought I would use this forum to clear the air. The fact is it can be very smart to purchase these. If saving money means something to you than surplus goods can be your best friend. It’s no different in the t-shirt business. The fact of the matter is factories (in our case t-shirt mills) overproduce all the time for a multitude of reasons. Perhaps a factory got an order for 1,000,000 shirts from a big box retailer and then the retailer decided to cut back the order because the shirts weren’t selling fast. Or maybe there was a mild winter like this year and the long sleeve t-shirt season was cut short. These types of situations come up all the time. What is the mill supposed to do with these surplus t-shirts? The answer is they sell it to companies like ours at a deep discount price. And then we can pass the savings along to our customers. It’s a win/win situation for everyone. (Except for the factory that is!!). There is absolutely nothing wrong with these tees. They are first quality but they cost less money. The mill screwed up and in order to unload their excess, they have to sell it at pennies on the dollar.

If you are in the market for apparel, buying surplus t-shirts could be on the best decisions you ever made. Another reason surplus t-shirts can occur is when a factory decides to discontinue a style or color. This also happens all the time. A factory decides they don’t want to sell the color teal in their 2012 spring line so they close it out. And you guessed it, when they close it out, the price drops. One last reason I can give you as to why surplus t-shirts occur is when a mill goes out of business. Then their stock becomes liquidation and companies like ours go in and buy the surplus t-shirts at discount prices. Bottom Line: Surplus T-Shirts are awesome for the right buyer. There is nothing wrong with the quality and the price can’t be beat.

How to Tie Dye T-Shirts

Tie Dye T-Shirts are extremely popular all year round but especially during the summer months! We carry a wide variety of different styles and patterns of wholesale tie dye t-shirts for both adults and kids. Wearing tie dye t-shirts is very fun but making them is even cooler! Tie dying is a way of creating patterns of color by folding, tying, stitching, crumpling or otherwise preparing the fabric to inhibit the flow of the dye into the folds of the fabric. The pattern of the folds and where the colors are put determines the final design. Not being able to fully control the end result is part of what makes tie dye an interesting and exciting form of art. Every tie dye is unique. That is our favorite part about our discount tie dye t-shirts. The first step in the tie dye process is to fold and tie your garment. You will fold and/or tie the fabric into the desired pattern. For a more defined pattern you should wet the shirt and squeeze out the excess water before folding or tying. The second step is to

Wholesale Tie Dye T-Shirts Being Made

soak the garments into a soda ash solution. A soda ash solution is Soda Ash Fixer (pure dense sodium carbonate) mixed with warm water. Soda Ash Fixer can be purchased at many retail stores as well as online. Soak the tied garments for about 5-15 minutes and then squeeze it out so it is still damp but not dripping. Next you will apply the dye to your garments using a squeeze bottle, sponge, paintbrush, etc. You can use as many colors as you want! After you have applied the dye, the garments will need to rest for a while. Put the garments in a plastic bag because you want them to stay damp. Let the garments cure for a minimum of 4 hours but for the brightest colors 24 hours is best. After the resting period is over you will need to wash it out. Leaving the ties on you will rinse the garments under cold running water to stop the dye reaction. Next rinse in warm water while you untie the folds and continue rinsing until the waters runs fairly clear. Throw the garments into a washing machine as soon as it is rinsed, run it through a full cycle and voila you have your own custom tie dye t-shirt!

Over the many years we have been in business, we have donated t-shirts to hundreds of organizations. From schools to summer camps to humanitarian service organizations we are more than happy to help them all with their t-shirt needs!

Around the office here at The Adair Group I am known as Ms. Fashionable. I, however, prefer Style Goddess, Fashionista or Clothes Junkie. Daytona Bike Week is Here!

VROOM, VROOM, VROOM! It is that time of the year again……Bike Week!! This is the time of the year when you see and hear thousands and thousands of motorcycles riding through the Black Hills of Sturgis all the way to cruising Main Street in Daytona Beach. This year the motorcycle rally in Daytona Beach, which just celebrated its 70^th anniversary, will be held from March 9^th-18^th. You will see every type of bike possible at the 2012 Bike Week in Daytona Beach. Everything from choppers to drag bikes and race bikes to vintage bikes will be there. More than 500,000 bikers are expected to attend the 71^st annual event in Daytona Beach. This 10 day celebration has been dubbed the “World’s Largest Motorcycle Event” and it brings every aspect of the motorcycle culture including bike rallies, races, manufacturer displays and stunt shows. We are fortunate to supply the blank black t-shirts that eventually get printed and become Daytona bike week t-shirts.

Daytone Bike Week is one of the biggest Motorcyle events in the country

Being from the Midwest, I have definitely ridden a “hog” or two in my day. I think my first time ever on a motorcycle was when I was probably 9 or 10. There is nothing like riding down the street with the wind in your hair and the roar of the bike. Not only do I love to ride, I love the whole motorcycle culture and I have been to Sturgis many times. It is so much fun!
